Taumata Arowai is the water service regulator for Aotearoa born out of Te Mana o te Wai – a universal concept that is about restoring and preserving the balance between the wai, the wider environment and the community. Taumata Arowai is governed by an independent, Minister-appointed Board. It is also advised on Māori rights and interests by a specialist rōpū (Māori Advisory Group, known as ‘Te Puna’).
You will be a strategic thinker leading mahi which ensures Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Mana o te Wai and mātauranga remain the foundation of the Taumata Arowai tikanga and operational delivery. This will involve leading a team providing specialist advice to Taumata Arowai and influencing across the water sector.
Your knowledge and experience:

  • Engaging strategically with Māori organisations, whānau, hapū and iwi
  • Providing strategic advice to Chief Executives and Leadership Teams
  • Working in the State sector in an advisory or policy role
  • Experience providing advice to governance Boards
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles and Te Mana o te Wai
  • Te ao Māori, mātauranga Māori, te reo me ona tikanga
  • Machinery of government and the public policy making process
  • Political, social, economic, and environmental context of the sector
  • Understanding of iwi and tribal politics
  • The Treaty debate and Crown/Māori partnership

Your skills and attributes

  • Advanced level of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori to communicate effectively in a range of situations
  • Well-developed, culturally appropriate oral presentation and facilitation skills
  • Well established whanau, hapū, iwi and Māori organisation networks
  • Credibility with senior leaders to engage, influence and challenge where necessary
  • Credibility to represent Taumata Arowai in a range of Māori settings
  • Ability to articulate a Māori world view and apply it to the work of Taumata Arowai
