Lawyer – Māori Legal

As a Lawyer in Rainey Collins’ Māori Legal team, you will provide high-quality legal advice across a range of areas including Māori Engagement, Māori Organisations and Treaty of Waitangi Litigation.  This is a unique opportunity to build on and develop your expertise in a specialist field that involves litigation.
Rainey Collins’ Māori Legal team are leaders in this area and have decades of experience representing Māori. This environment offers challenging work, long-term working relationships with clients, liaising with government agencies, and an opportunity to learn from experts in this specialist field. You will be working on significant cases which will involve:

  • Meeting with clients
  • Considering evidence
  • Drafting legal documents and presenting legal submissions
  • Briefing, leading witnesses and cross-examination; and
  • Appearing before the Waitangi Tribunal

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • At least two years’ experience as a Legal Aid Lead provider or be eligible to apply for this status
  • A current NZLS practising certificate
  • Proven experience in Waitangi Tribunal work
  • Excellent attention to detail and preferably an interest in working with historical documents
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Outstanding judgement; and
  • An affinity and respect for tikanga Māori
